IT Innovation in the Field of Oncology: the University of Salento and the Almaviva Group in the OncologIA R&D Project

02-08-2024

The trial of the OncologIA research and development project, dedicated to the application of innovative IT technologies in the field of oncology, in which Almaviva Digitaltec, Almawave, and the University of Salento collaborated, has come to a close.

Over the past 24 months, an advanced diagnosis platform has been developed using machine learning, blockchain, and Digital Twin (digital healthcare identity) technologies. This cloud-based platform is designed to serve local oncology networks and assist medical personnel in identifying personalized treatments for patients, predicting potential complications, and determining the best follow-up strategy according to the local services available.

The solution developed operates within a framework that ensures adherence to the highest security standards, thanks to the implementation of data encryption and validation mechanisms during data collection, processing, and distribution (including IHE, PHE, and FHE homomorphic encryption and strong anonymization), and the study and use of various privacy mechanisms for secure access (consent, revocation, and access logs, with verification for IoT devices, wearables, etc. as well).

The research project is co-financed by the Apulia Region - Contract Program for a total investment of more than €6.5 M.

The University of Salento, under the coordination of Prof. Angelo Corallo, scientific head of the Department of Engineering’s CPS Lab, building on the traditional oncology pathway (oncology networks), contributed to the study and implementation of a mapping of healthcare and social-healthcare facilities. Through analysis of the processes and information generated, the study made it possible to introduce recommendation mechanisms, also based on geography, that would allow case managers to instantly identify the most suitable facility for the required needs. Furthermore, a specific study of the regional cancer registry was conducted which resulted in a correlation matrix between pollutants and cancer pathologies from 2005 to the present. The study produced heat maps that can provide important insights when combined with other information.

The University of Salento and the Almaviva Group are committed to tackling new challenges and exploring collaborative opportunities together.
