Cybersecurity: 84% of SMEs have an exposed attack surface.

AlmavivA and Trend Micro strengthen their partnership for the cybersecurity of Italian companies, capable of ensuring business continuity.

Rome, December 4th 2020 – A survey conducted on the top 500 SMEs, through the Joshua cyber intelligence platform of Almaviva, the leading Italian digital innovation group, revealed that 84% of Italian-based companies have an exposed attack surface due to the use of obsolete applications. Some 13% of these SMEs, which make up the backbone of the country’s entire productive system, are even exposed to dangerous applications, while 16% have vulnerabilities due to the presence of abandoned applications unknown to the IT Department, which must guarantee the updating of systems and the decommissioning of assets.

The survey reveals just how important prevention is in the digital transformation era. In order to continue offering organizations and companies the best solutions available on the market, AlmavivA has strengthened its partnership with Trend Micro, a global cybersecurity leader, by integrating the vendor’s solutions in its own technological offer.

Italian companies currently implement complex digital projects, made even more fragile by the developments of the new normality. “To stay competitive it is essential to protect business continuity,” commented Roger Cataldi, Head of Cybersecurity Practice of AlmavivA, “cybersecurity is a fundamental element of this strategy. In this context, we decided to strengthen the partnership with Trend Micro, which significantly boosts the response capacity of organizations.”

“Cybersecurity has become indispensable nowadays both for protecting business and ensuring its continuity and also as a business enabler, when we think of the difficulties organizations are experiencing due to the fact that most of their activities are being conducted remotely.” This view was expressed by Alessandro Fontana, Head of Sales at Trend Micro Italia. “For this reason it’s crucial to offer the best solutions on the market but also to work as a team, to collaborate together in high-value joint projects that safeguard individual organizations as well as the country’s entire productive system. In this regard, we are very pleased to be able to collaborate with a company such as AlmavivA, given its experience and long-standing presence on the Italian market.”

The survey

The survey of the Joshua cyber intelligence platform of AlmavivA was conducted with an innovative method: today, thanks to OSINT (Open Source Intelligence) data and the use of new tools, it is possible to define a target simply knowing the organization’s name. The study considered 148 thousand SMEs, with a turnover between 2 and 50 million Euro and over 10 employees, mainly operating in the mechanical engineering, fashion, agrifood and chemical-pharmaceutical industries. They are the backbone of Italy’s productive fabric and their security is fundamental also for the security of the large corporations and organizations to which they are linked.

Of the 500 top SMEs analyzed, only 10% lacked vulnerable aspects, but this is probably ascribable to their lower level of innovation rather than to effective security systems. “We are talking about healthy and growing companies, in which the attention to security-related aspects is proportional to the digitalization processes,” continued Cataldi, “physiologically the more the digital surface expands, the greater the probability of exposing vulnerabilities which can be exploited by a highly expert criminal system.”

AlmavivA and Trend Micro will present their exclusive partnership during a digital event:
