The Data Appeal Company (TDAC), part of Almawave Group, joined with Doxa to conduct a study combining objective data and residents’ perceptions to understand the impact of overtourism in urban areas.

The analysis integrated data analyzed by TDAC from over 130 digital sources and a survey conducted by Doxa on a representative sample of more than 500 residents. The results show an urban geography with different, ever-changing balances.

“The correlation between tourism and quality of life is not automatic and can vary from neighborhood to neighborhood,” says Mirko Lalli, CEO and founder of TDAC. “To understand it, we need context, data, effective technologies, and listening to people in the area. Our model integrates objective analysis and residents’ perceptions and is presented as an operational tool for public managers and policy makers.”

Susanna De Luca, Senior Research Manager at Doxa, adds: “Participating in this project was a valuable opportunity for us to introduce different, yet complementary approaches, integrating the quantitative analysis and data from The Data Appeal reported in our paper with qualitative interviews with residents and web-based listening activities. We wanted to look at the phenomenon from various perspectives, cross-referencing objective data with subjective voices, until we understood what residents think deep down or express online, often critically and directly.”
