The AlmavivA Blockchain for Digital Health Care: the Motore Sanità Tech Academy begins

In the setting of Asiago, during the seventh edition of the Motore Sanità Summer School, the new Motore Sanità Tech Academy project was presented. This is a training curriculum dedicated to general, health and administrative directors of hospitals, local health authorities and territorial agencies all over Italy.

Leading organizations in the ICT sector will accompany participants in the exploration of the digital technology world as applied to health care.

AlmavivA will be taking the lead for the Blockchain theme.

There are many operations that this technology can implement to improve the processes that characterize the Health Care ecosystem and to resolve points of discussion that are still currently open.

First and foremost, management of medical device (MD) procurement, the protagonist in our country of profound innovation: the introduction of the “value-based” approach and the assessment of the clinical benefit. In this context, Blockchain is an instrument of traceability for the procurement and purchase process and the management and automation of the supply process through smart contract.

Another sector of extreme interest where Blockchain demonstrates its value is traceability of diagnostics kits, with reference both to human disease and monitoring food products and to the sequencing of the genome. In the post-Covid-19 era, the need has arisen to authenticate every test kit from the manufacturer to the patient, to guarantee privacy through encrypted data, to prevent tampering with the results and loss of data, to allow instant access to the test results and, last but not least, tracing of the symptoms. In this context, Blockchain ensures the necessary transparency to consumers on the origins and authenticity of the kits.

Blockchain also comes into play in conducting clinical trials, the costs, duration and success rate of which depend heavily on data management. Tracing the experimental protocol, along with communication from and to the patient, and monitoring the enrolled subjects after the studies using a log of the adverse reactions to the drug on Blockchain certainly improves the progress of the trial.

Speaking of logs, reference to the bio-testament is a must. Even the DAT, along with consent management, passes through Blockchain Technology, which provides significant advantages for the patient and the operators involved in terms of certainty of rights and guarantee of respect for the right to self-determination in end-of-life treatment choices.

Last, but not least, traceability is also an important advantage in hospital operation paths where, in the event of deficit or malfunction of medical devices, the absence of liability must be demonstrated. To protect the integrity and quality of a network of interconnected medical devices, wearable medical devices, but also the very management of the surgical operation, the origin and path of the components and their functionality can be guaranteed by Blockchain technology.
