“Rail transport: the digital evolution is made in Italy”

AlmavivA, the leading solution provider in the Italian market, has perfected sophisticated on-board systems and end-to-end solutions attuned to the passenger’s needs. A technological excellency poised to spread through the world

Though it may seem like ages ago, only ten years ago train conductors used to raise an analogue handset to announce the next stop. Nowadays, a train with 5 carriages contains at least 200 devices linked to one another in a network and exchanges an enormous amount of information while travelling at over 300 kilometres an hour. A similar on-board technological system is as advanced as a medium-large operations office.

Route and speed indicators, videos on on-board screens, voice announcements, and portals and apps accessible directly from personal devices inform travellers and enable them to interact in real time. How far have carriages and locomotives come in just three decades? Very far, technologically speaking. The digital wave is revolutionising each aspect of rail transport.

A modern and integrated system for informing customers, such as the one developed by AlmavivA, is currently able to control all information channels in an automated way, updating them in real time with data from a multitude of sources. More than 20,000 appliances installed on a fleet of around 2,500 trains can channel information for 8,000 journeys a day, on the Italian territory. If automating a carriage’s voice announcements alone requires a single appliance installed on board, equipping an entire carriage of an advanced train with all services can require over 40 devices, including monitors, emergency intercoms, video cameras for safety, passenger counters and other elements.
