Blockchain to the aid of “Made in Italy”: AlmavivA at the conference of the Italian Food Technology Association (AITA)

Italy is Europe’s leading producer of products of designated origin; in recent years, trade of counterfeit products has grown exponentially and constitutes a considerable threat to economic growth, while also jeopardizing the implementation of good practices and the country’s image abroad.

The issue will be debated at “Made in Italy, geographic indications & traceability,” the conference promoted by AITA to cast some light on the current market situation, the policies to defend national products and the future prospects.

Fulvio Conti, Head of Agriculture and Environment Practice, will be speaking for AlmavivA. He will illustrate the available technological solutions to guarantee the authenticity of products and combat counterfeiting. One such solution is blockchain technology, which forms the basis of the traceability system implemented by AlmavivA for the wine-growing sector and of the system proposed recently to uncover food frauds and recognize the origin and authenticity of Sicilian blood oranges.

The AlmavivA solution for defending Sicily’s citrus farming sector is known as “Rouge”. It was recently presented at MacFruit 2019 in Rimini and will aid companies of the Blood Oranges of Sicily IGP Consortium. The system is based on the interaction between the portal used by the consortium, which shows data coming from the various production sources to monitor the entire segment, and a smartphone app used by consumers, which will provide information from the field to the table thanks to a geolocalization system integrated with the tag attached to the orange crates.

AlmavivA has been heading the computerization of the national agricultural sector ever since the beginning and is now aiding its digital transformation. The intervention at the AITA Conference will focus on the concept of all-round traceability in the agri-food sector thanks to a supply chain management 4.0 platform.
