Italy needs to accelerate the implementation of a strategy for Cyber Security, to protect the interests of both Italian businesses and the country as a whole, and the European NIS Network and Information Security Directive approved last July could mark a significant shift in focus.

The Directive, which needs to be implemented by the Members States within 21 months from its publication, provides for a suite of common security measures designed to ensure a high level of security for systems, networks and information. In particular: the adoption of a national cyber-security strategy; the identification of one or more authorities responsible for overseeing the application of the directive nationwide; the choice of one or more Computer Security Incident Response Teams (CSRIT), in charge of monitoring incidents across the country. The Directive will also have a significant impact on businesses because it sets out a number of security and notification obligations for the operators of essential services and critical infrastructure and for digital service providers.
