The presentation of the results of phase 2 of the National Survey of Forests and Carbon Sinks – at the conference on “The national system for forest statistics: current situation and prospects”, organized by Istat and by the Italian Forest Police and held on 29 May in the Conference Hall of the Institute – proved an opportunity to exchange information between the institutions involved in the production and use of forest statistics, with a view to integrating and harmonizing the information currently available through the system developed by Agrisian (AlmavivA Group) for the National Survey of Forests and Carbon Sinks (INFC) and acknowledged by ISTAT as the official system for circulating information on the state and evolution of Italy’s forests.

The conference was also an opportunity to present the new INFC website and the DVD “Conoscere l’Inventario” (All about the Survey), also produced by Agrisian.
The www.infc.it website has been entirely overhauled, with regard to the layout of its contents and, first and foremost, in accordance with the applicable regulations on the accessibility and user-friendliness of Government websites. The new website, in fact, is XHTML 1.0 Strict certified.

“Conoscere l’Inventario” opens with a short dramatisation of a typical day in the life of a group of real forest rangers, set against a breathtaking backdrop of forests and mountains, spent in gathering information for the Survey and enlivened by several “unscheduled” events.
One section, shot in a studio with some explanatory animations, informs viewers about the many and complex activities involved in creating the Survey.
Finally, there is an interview with Massimo Bianchi, Director of the CRA-ISAFA Experimental Institute, who explains the purpose of the Survey, while presenting data aggregated on a regional basis and tables showing data on forests and carbon sinks.
