Finsiel develops solutions for Italian culture

The Web Culture Portal features new contents and a unique e-commerce service, for Italy.

In the information society, the wealth of individuals and, indeed, of the community at large and the entire country, largely depends on knowledge and on the capacity to disseminate, share and develop it.

Education and culture have become key sectors, especially in a country, like Italy, which can boast 80% of the world’s art and cultural heritage. These are sectors in which Finsiel has gained a considerable expertise, having supported and taken part in the entire automation process.

One year on from its launch, the Web Culture Portal is now offering new contents and tools. In recent days several new digital archives have been added, featuring old music scores and manuscripts, including the most prized examples of the 18th century Neapolitan school and also covering the entire 19th century, preserved at the S. Pietro a Majella Conservatory of Music; the “Italian Authors” Series designed by Benedetto Croce; the Casa della Musica musical institution of the City of Parma; the Mare Magnum Collection of the Marucelliana Library. Furthermore, it is now possible to buy high-resolution quality digital contents online. A novelty for a government portal, which now offers a service of international level.

Finsiel, which developed the software and repository management functionalities of the Web Culture Portal in 2004, has now supplemented the Portal’s archives, increasing its knowledge-related offering, while, with respect to the e-commerce service, it addresses all the Merchant System and management system integration aspects such as, in particular:
  • e-shop creation and management
  • product e-catalog management
  • order management (virtual shopping basket)
  • shop and customer management.
The Web Culture Portal, which provides an integrated system for accessing the conventional and digital resources of Italian libraries, archives and other cultural institutions, is the result of the Italian Digital Library project, launched in 2001 with the aim of better exploiting the enormous heritage of the Servizio Bibliotecario Nazionale (SBN), the Italian National Library Service, which is the core of the Sistema Informativo delle Biblioteche Italiane, the National Library Information System developed by Finsiel.

The National Library Service is a web-based network connecting over 2,600 Italian libraries, ranging from major institutions, such as the National Libraries of Rome and Florence, to other smaller and more specialist libraries. The largest online library in Italy may be accessed from home or the workplace and offers 10 million titles, 2.4 million authors, 19 million volumes and documents distributed in all the SBN member libraries.

Finsiel has been the technology partner to the ICCU - Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo Unico e per le informazioni bibliografiche, the Culture Ministry’s Central Institute for the Single Catalog of Italian Libraries and for Bibliographical Information, for 20 years now, i.e. right from the launch of the great SBN project. Due to this longstanding project continuity, concerning one of the largest library networks worldwide, Finsiel can now rightly boast to be the Italian IT company with the best expertise in developing systems and solutions for libraries and culture in general. The new goals that have been set are spreading the enormous Italian culture and arts heritage to boost research, improving the image of the country worldwide, transforming the immense heritage of libraries and cultural institutions into a proper digital library open to everybody, wherever they may be
