The AlmavivA Group is again supporting the Italian Red Cross and its distribution of the Guidelines on unblocking children's airways and related cardiopulmonary resuscitation techniques.

It really doesn't take much at all to save the life of a child. This time, we are not talking about children who live in faraway lands, those you see in the awareness campaigns for associations promoting long-distance adoption and support to improve the living conditions of those in poor countries. This time, we are talking about the children in our daily lives.

The Italian Paediatric Society estimates that every year 50 children die of suffocation caused by "foreign bodies" – food, toys, sweets, etc – but the most shocking thing is that those who find themselves intervening in those first, dramatic moments in an emergency do not know how to do react, or how to do so effectively. In both cases, the consequences can be dreadful.
For example, in the stress of the moment, many take the child by the feet or stick their fingers in his or her mouth with the intention of removing the object blocking the airways, worsening the situation with extreme consequences. Some freeze with fear and do not intervene at all. Others feel too sure of themselves in "knowing what to do", perhaps because they have attended a first-aid course, without considering that these courses are largely based on the anatomies, physiologies and reactions of adults, which are different from those of children.
In practice, not knowing how to react can cause lethal errors.

To prevent precisely such situations, the Italian Red cross has, since 2010, been running a campaign to spread the guidelines on unblocking children's airways and related cardiopulmonary resuscitation techniques for everyone: parents, grandparents, baby-sitters, teachers, volunteers, healthcare professionals, etc.

The AlmavivA Group has chosen to support this informative awareness programme as part of its Social Programme "FOR US".
