ADVISE – an innovative project co-financed by the European Union for the fight against crime and for the safety of citizens – sees AlmavivA ranking among the top European partners

Rome, 09/06/2014 – AlmavivA is one of the European partners participating in the Advise project (http://www.advise-project.eu), which also involves centres of excellence in the field of video-image management research, including the Centre for Research and Technology Hellas – Informatics and Telematics Institute in Thessaloniki (Greece), and the Queen Mary and Westfield College of the University of London (UK).
The fight against crime at the European level can count on a sophisticated tool, thanks to ADVISE (ADvanced VIdeo Surveillance archives search Engine for security applications), an innovative project, co-financed by the European Union as part of the "security and space" theme of the Seventh Framework Programme. ADVISE is an innovative tool which allows both local and national police forces to follow the tracks of criminals, recorded and archived in video surveillance systems.
The project aims to strengthen the security systems of the organisations – police forces, but also company security departments – whose facilities already include video surveillance equipment, and to aid investigators in identifying criminal acts that occur in these settings at a particular moment and location, more quickly and easily.
To demonstrate the effectiveness of the tool, two pilot projects have been set up, with the aim of meeting different needs and following different types of events. AlmavivA is responsible for these experiments.

Each of the two pilot projects and the ADVISE framework itself have been developed employing a PIA (Privacy Impact Assessment) approach, which guarantees respect for privacy and ethical standards.
The Italian pilot involves AMT (Azienda Municipalizzata Trasporti) of Genoa, which works in the local public transport sector, and the project is aimed at identifying acts of vandalism and theft within the public transport system.
The other pilot project is organised by the Madrid Police Department and is aimed at aiding the officers in their fight against street crime (fights, pick pocketing, etc.) The two projects will be presented at the second ADVISE workshop in Athens between November and December 2014.
