The new portal of the National Agricultural Information System – developed by Finsiel – goes online

SIAN - Sistema Informativo Agricolo Nazionale, the National Agricultural Information System – developed by Finsiel and managed by Agrisian since 2002 – comprises a set of databases providing a reliable snapshot of the country’s physical environment.
SIAN is a highly complex information system, from the point of view of both its design and management, which integrates and makes available to all the agricultural stakeholders and users the services conducted on behalf of the Ministry of Agriculture and of AGEA (Agenzia per le Erogazioni in Agricoltura), the Italian Rural Payments Agency, namely:
  • controlling and transferring entitlements to farmers, under the applicable domestic and Community regulations
  • monitoring the size of cropland areas by means of aerial photography, agronomic surveys and local meetings with the farmers
  • supporting the institutional programming and supervisory activities
  • promoting quality products
  • preventing and prosecuting food safety offences
  • providing services to fishing and aquaculture
  • providing agricultural weather forecasting services.
Future agricultural policy, at domestic and EU level, requires the development of ecologically-friendly farming practices, taking land use into greater account and in line with the regional decentralization process. SIAN supports and assists this process of local decentralization of services through the Web and directly to the user’s home.
The portal is a one-stop gateway to the information and services of the National Agricultural Information System; although it primarily targets the institutional stakeholders and a specialist public of industry operators, it also provides general information to a broader user base. Therefore, it has proved necessary to improve its user friendliness and adapt it to the recently-introduced regulations on accessibility.
The principal aims of the portal redesign are to reorganize the content architecture and optimize the navigation experience. There has been a significant focus on accessibility compliance and all the navigation pages and portal services are now fully accessible
