Finsiel is awarded the contract for managing the ICCU DPC

Consolidating its role in the cultural heritage sector.

The temporary consortium set up by Finsiel (as the consortium leader) and Gepin S.p.A., has been awarded the European contract for Managing the Data Processing Centre of the Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo Unico delle Biblioteche Italiane e per le Informazioni Bibliografiche (ICCU), the Culture Ministry's Central Institute for the Single Catalog of Italian Libraries and for Bibliographical Information.

The service comprises the functional operation, systems support, and operational management of the DPC systems and the linked network components. Finsiel will be responsible for the functional operation and systems support, besides the coordination of the entire project.

The contract confirms Finsiel's role as the privileged partner of the Culture Ministry's Directorate-General for the Library Heritage and Cultural Institutes (DGBL), and, in particular, for the ICCU, on behalf of which it has been managing, since the 80s, the National Library Service for the online sharing of the catalogs of Italian libraries, one of the largest library networks worldwide.

The current objective of the National Library Service is to go beyond the current concept of "catalog", towards the construction of a network of digital libraries, making available books, periodicals and manuscripts for online consultation, and linking the libraries between themselves and with other Italian and European cultural institutions, schools and universities, as part of an integrated system for cataloging, digitizing, producing and selling contents and services, which can be accessed and used by the public, researchers, and teachers, on an everyday basis.

Following are a few key figures:
  • Linked facilities: 55
  • Linked libraries: 2,231
  • Managed titles: approx. 8,000,000
