AlmavivA has decided to add its strength to the Red Cross campaign for spreading guidelines on Child Foreign Body Airway Obstruction (FBAO) and related cardio-pulmonary resuscitation techniques.

Sometimes it takes very little indeed to save a child’s life. This time we’re not talking about the children living in faraway countries that we see in the awareness-raising campaigns launched by the various Organisations that promote long-distance adoption or collect funds for the poorer third-world countries. This time it’s all about the children in the everyday life of each one of us.

The Italian Pediatric Society has estimated (2007) that every year no less than 50 children die as a result of FBAO (with food, toys, sweets, etc.). But what strikes us most is the fact that very few people, faced with this kind of emergency, know exactly what to do and how to do it properly, with disastrous consequences.

For example, many people think that the best solution is to hold the baby upside down by the feed or, worse, try to pull out the object causing the obstruction with their fingers, thus making the situation considerably worse.
Others become ‘paralysed’ by fear and do nothing at all.
Yet others think they know exactly what to do, because they attended a first aid course ... without considering the fact that these courses generally focus on adults, who have a different anatomy, physiology and reactions.
In short, NOT KNOWING how to act and what to do can have lethal consequences.

To prevent these situations, the Italian Red Cross Organisation – with the support of Capgemini – has launched a campaign to spread the guidelines on FBAO, and the related cardio-pulmonary resuscitation techniques, targeting a broad spectrum of people: parents, grandparents, babysitters, teachers, volunteers, health personnel, etc..

AlmavivA Group has decided to contribute to this awareness and knowledge spreading campaign, as part of its PER NOI Programme.

The project is coordinated and directed by Dr. Marco Squicciarini, Vice Commissioner for the Region of Lazio and a national and international Red Cross contact.
