The customer

Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane, Italy’s major state rail operator and one of the most important in Europe, for which AlmavivA TSF is the ICT partner since 1997, delivering and managing IT systems for business processes and management systems.

The challenge and the solution

GAIa is the information system developed by AlmavivA TSF, which implements the Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane Group’s Integrated Administrative Management Model, and represents the evolution of the first administrative and accounting system developed in 1999 on a SAP platform, called S.Fin.G.E.

S.Fin.G.E. – the acronym of Sistema Finanziario Gestionale ed Economico, the Financial Management and Economic System – was developed to meet FS’ need to dispose of a technical and application architecture suited to supporting the organizational and structural evolution of the corporate demerger processes (in 1999, FS was a single company, while today it is a group made up of over 40 companies).

The S.Fin.G.E. system developed by AlmavivA TSF for FS Group was an integrated and modular system for General Accounting, Management Control, Treasury & Finance and Business Management, aimed at ensuring a more effective strategic and operational control, combining administrative and accounting aspects, on the one hand, and management and business aspects, on the other.

In 2009, FS launched the GAIa project, for the purpose of introducing an organic and structured Governance system, relating to the management of Compliance with Law 262/2005 (on the transparency of administration activities and the certification of financial reporting data) and to launch a process of implementation of the IFRS standards, with a view to producing financial reports and statements consistent with the needs of the international market.

Therefore, the aim of GAIa is to foster the standardization and harmonization, within the Group, of the (i) administration/accounting management procedures, and (ii) rules and procedures for auditing administrative data, thus providing the single companies with state-of-the-art technology and introducing an integrated network-based model.

GAIa therefore supports the efficiency of the operational management of the administrative processes, through access to centralized administrative and IT management services.

Advantages

  • The systems are technological suited for Group integration purposes, in accordance with the applicable reliability and security requirements and standards
  • Compliance with the Group’s administrative and accounting rules
  • Support in the changeover to the IFRS standards
GAIa – says Alessandro Musumeci, CIO of the Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane Group – is a fundamental and, indeed, forceful system for ensuring the centralized control of the administrative and accounting management processes, while at the same time ensuring the highest possible degree of independence for the single companies, with respect to the specific processes relating to their core business and corporate mission. It therefore provides an effective contribution to the achievement of the Group-wide standardization and harmonization objectives and the technological development of the single subsidiaries”.
