The educating city: innovation for on-going training

The experimentation of the prototype for the Life-Long Learning activity, part of “The Educating City” research project, got under way on 19th October. The aim is to take advantage of the “on-going training marketplace” to create, exchange and share training contents and ideas.

The portal of “The Educating City” contains information on the experimental marketing courses of the Department of Economics and Management of the University of Trento, and the courses organised by AlmavivA: one entitled, “Introduction to LEAN thinking”, and two focusing on project management. All the courses include a learning and satisfaction test, in addition to moments for sharing materials, experiences and suggestions.

“The Educating City” intends to help create a new paradigm whereby the proposed innovation does not exclusively concern technological aspects, but the way in which technologies and methodologies are used in the educational context, to close the current gap between institutional education and the requirements of a continuously evolving society.

It proposes to rethink the traditional learning environment and the role of educators, by developing education approaches based on the systematic use of the new IT technologies, the Internet and social networks, which start from school but involve the entire community. The ultimate goal is to create on-going and widespread teaching and learning ecosystems.

Learning environments have been designed and built that include software for 3D interaction, tools for semantic comprehension based on video clips, images and texts, sensors and robotic components.

AlmavivA is currently experimenting the solutions with some prototypes:

  • for children aged 3–11 years: four schools in Reggio Emilia have been equipped with “The Educating City” knowledge management and extraction platform, integrated with the Technological Vegetable Patch IoT application;
  • for youths aged 19–25: students of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Trento will use the AstaLaVista mobile application containing a dynamic map to guide them to classrooms or other sites of interest;
  • for the LLL bracket: 100 AlmavivA employees will use the knowledge management platform integrated with the e-learning platform for three months.
