Cybersecurity and Critical Infrastructures: Almaviva CISO Cataldi’s speech at CyberSec2024, on the 6th and 7th, focuses on water as a resource

In the new era of AI, cyber attacks are increasingly focused on the sector of critical infrastructure. In 2023, over 1300 attacks on utilities were recorded worldwide, with an increase of 18% as compared to the previous year (ref. Global Avg. Weekly Cyber Attacks per Industry 2023 Q2 vs 2022 Q2). CISO of Almaviva, Roger Cataldi, will talk about this at CyberSec2024, the 3rd edition of the international conference organized by the newspaper Cybersecurity Italia, taking place on March 6th and 7th in Rome. Thanks to the contribution of national and international cybersecurity experts, the conference will provide in-depth analysis and insights into the technological and regulatory developments in the field of cybersecurity, with a significant focus on the new frontiers of artificial intelligence for cybersecurity.

“In this moment,” says Cataldi, “critical infrastructures in Italy are experiencing opportunistic attacks driven by economic motives and to gain visibility by threat actors. In an international context characterized by strong geopolitical instability, however, there is growing concern about possible cyber attacks coordinated by nations, in a form of hybrid warfare that’s capable of disrupting essential services in cities, regions, and entire countries. In this scenario, targeted attacks on the water system could cause ripple effects, with dramatic impacts on society and our economy.

The European Union has established a precise regulatory framework, Directive NIS2, which aims to create a common level of cybersecurity in all member states of the union and harmonize strategies and measures that EU member states must adopt in order to protect critical infrastructures from the growing onslaught of cyber attacks.

Through the adoption of standards and best practices such as IEC62443, an international framework for the security of industrial control systems and critical infrastructures, it is possible to implement appropriate protective measures to reduce cyber risk. Among these, the intelligence services offered by Almaviva through its Cyber Threat Defense Center are particularly effective in terms of prevention and detection of attacks.”
